UNA football started spring training Tuesday, Feb. 23 with two new coaches and several new players who will be learning the way of the Lions.
Spring training usually starts between February and March. The NCAA allows a 30-day window to complete 15 practices. Many schools finish their practices before Spring Break, but it depends upon their academic schedule.
Junior running back Wes Holland said, "We will be doing individual drills, as well as team stuff where we can work on plays and just get better together."
Holland said they have several transfer players that will help the team not only with their talent, but also add more depth to the team.
The Lions also hired two new coaches during the offseason.
UNA Athletic Director Mark Linder said, "The two new coaches (Tony Pecoraro and Dontae Wright), are friendly with great personalities, have excellent coaching experience and will be a strong asset to the coaching staff."
Tony Pecoraro coached at Florida State before coming to UNA. He will be the defensive coordinator and coach the linebackers. He said he is very excited to be with such a successful team and university and is looking forward to the season.
"I love being here. The town, the people and the coaches are all great. It is a great opportunity to be a part of a tradition like this; I hope to help it live on and we win a conference and national championship this year," said Pecoraro.
Dontae Wright came to UNA after coaching at the University of Kentucky for three years. He will be coaching the defensive line for the Lions.
"One of the many goals I have is for the defensive line to lead the country in sacks, but of course I want that conference and national title," said Wright.
Wright played football at the University of Miami and said if you cannot keep playing the game, an easy way to stay in it is by coaching and being involved with it.
The football team members and coaches are all eager for the 2010 season.
The two new coaches, the freshmen and transfer players will soon learn the work ethic and determination of a UNA Lion.
"I'm just excited to get back into the flow of things, see how our team comes and molds together and get prepared to win a national championship," said Wes Holland.
