UNA entered Saturday's game against Harding University 4-0 and ready for a big win. The week before, Terry Bowden, had requested a shutout from his Division I talented Division II defense."Defensively we were challenged by Coach Bowden to get a shutout," said UNA linebacker "Big" Michael Johnson. "We did just that."
UNA opened up the flood gates in Searcy, Ark., on their way to a 38-0 bashing of the Bisons.
Bowden's words of wisdom rang true in the minds of his defense as they held the Bisons to just 198 yards of total offense. UNA's offense struggled early, and for the first time all season failed to score on its opening drive.
Although UNA mustered a field goal on its second possession, the offense gave a fumble as a gift to the Harding defense.
With the theme being defense, UNA stepped up as Quinton Andrews blocked a field goal, denying the Bisons any hope of even staying in the game.
The route was on, after a 62-yard touchdown drive, senior QB Harrison Beck hit Mico Mcswain for a 33 yard touchdown pass putting the lions up 17-0.
UNA's stout defense set the tone of the game, by providing the offense with prime real estate.
After UNA's Jason Tate interception set Beck just outside the red zone, Beck found Preston Parker for a 23-yard touchdown pass.
"Our defense is the biggest reason we win because they give us so many opportunities for a short field," said Harrison Beck, who went 18 of 31 for 252 yards and three touchdowns.
"The offense did an excellent job of reinventing themselves as nasty run blockers," said Beck.
UNA capped off the beating late in the fourth when Beck hit the third of the "Tremendous Three," T.J. Porter for a 34-yard touchdown toss.
UNA pushes its record up to 5-0 after the "Harding Blowout."
UNA will welcome a 3-1 Arkansas Tech team, as the lions celebrate homecoming this Saturday.
