Lion's tennis team heads to GSC Tournament

The UNA men's and women's tennis teams each punched their ticket to next week's Gulf South Conference tournament
by defeating West Alabama Wednesday evening on the road.
The UNA men swept doubles
play en route to a 5-2 win while the women's team rallied
from an early 2-1 deficit to post a 5-3 victory at the Howard R. Vaughan Tennis Complex on the UWA campus.
For the men, the win wraps up the third seed in the GSC East Division. The Lions will play the No. 2 seed from the West in opening-round action next Friday at the Lagoon Tennis Complex in Montgomery.
Against the Tigers, UNA was able to take control early in the match. Jan Miskos and Zac Bereznicki posted a solid 8-2 win at the No. 1 spot, while Reed Pilling and Chris Sodemann pulled out a 9-7 victory at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3, Clint Johnson and Carlos Cardenas rallied from a 5-2 deficit to knock of James Gardner and Carlin Tighe 8-6.
Miskos gave the Lions their fourth point with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles. After losses at No. 2 and No. 3, UNA clinched the match when Cardenas wrapped up a 6-3, 6-0 decision at the No. 4 spot.
On the women's side, UNA overcame a 2-1 deficit after doubles play. At the No. 1 spot, Yuliya Zelenskaya and Lenka Hola paired up to post an 8-6 win, but the Lions would get no more points from doubles play.
After UNA lost at No. 1 singles, Zelenskaya (No. 2) and Hola (No. 4) also posted straight-sets victories, while Mallory Waites pulled out a win at No. 3 with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 triumph to give the Lions a 4-3 advantage.
Arrie Moore secured the win at the No. 6 spot by posting
a 6-2, 6-2 win over the Tigers' Cori Waters.
The women's team is scheduled to face Montevallo on Friday in a make-up match from an earlier rain cancellation.
The Lions defeated UM 9-0 on Feb. 14 in a non-GSC matchup.
A victory over the Falcons would secure the No. 3 spot in the East Division, while a loss would send the team to the fourth spot.
