Séance Fiction, a Florence-based band was recently honored with the title "Best Metal Band of the Shoals." Their music is a combination of Metal and Industrial, with a tinge of Trance and Electronica. The band has been playing in various incarnations for some time and most recently they've added a drummer- Craig Carrigee, a.k.a. "Physics."

While not for the faint of heart or members of the religious right, fans of bands such as DethKlok, Nine Inch Nails, Tool, Strapping Young Lad, and CockFight Club might find Seance Fiction right up their alley. Last week the band was kind enough to sit down for an interview. The bassist Fred Crowe had a scheduling conflict but singer Evan Clayton, keyboardist Alex Frost, guitarist Adam "Swamprat" Lawson, and drummer Craig "Physics" Carrigee were able to make it.

Flor-Ala: So where are you guys from?

Evan: Center Alabama, about 20 min from the GA line. We have a lake, some trees, and that's about it. Adam's from Limestone County, Physics [Craig] is from Starkville, Frost is from Pell City.

Flor-Ala: You guys meet in Florence?

Evan: Yeah, I met Frost; we started working with Gary Lee. When Gary left we called up Adam and he started working with us, playing bass. Fred, who's not here, used to play bass in a band I was in back home called Idiot. He played guitar in that band. Then we got a hold of Physics, or Craig as he's known to the rest of the world. We met him at a battle of the bands at the Princess Theater; he was playing with a band from Mississippi called Punchthroat. We were still using a drum machine at the time. We went up there for another gig and it ended up being a scheduling nightmare. They had been double booked that night so basically we sat around and bitched and got drunk. Craig was there that night, we ended up hanging out and-

Craig: I wasn't playing either, just drinking.

Evan: Yeah, he was there just cause they had beer, too. So we sat around and talked and he said he'd like to play drums with us, since we'd been using a laptop with a drum program, and we were that band without a drummer, but we'd been doing it for years. So basically we were in a good position, we could be picky with drummers, anybody we get's gonna have to take the John Henry steam engine challenge. Anyway, he started driving back and forth from Starkville and started playing with us. And after the first practice we were dead set. We were like "Yeah, we want him." Then Frost wanted to move to keyboards cause he was playing guitar at the time. So we were kinda playing musical chairs with our musical instruments. So Frost moved to keys, Adam moved to guitar, Physics became our drummer, and we hired Fred to play bass. I'm the only one who stayed with their instrument. So that's where we're at now, and we'll probably stay with this setup.
