The UNA softball team can finally breathe.

A year after missing the Gulf South Conference tournament by a half-game, the Lions are back in the playoffs, clinching a bid for the GSC Tournament last weekend despite being swept in a doubleheader against Alabama-Huntsville. A pair of losses by West Georgia helped UNA earn the fourth seed in the GSC East Division. The top four teams in each division qualify for the GSC Tournament, held May 2-4 in Southaven, Miss.

It was certainly a bittersweet day for UNA, which was shut out in both games against the third-ranked Chargers, 8-0 and 7-0.

Alabama-Huntsville pitcher Alex Lewis pitched a one-hitter in the second game, cruising after her offense gave her an early 6-0 lead. The Chargers scored four in the first and added two in the second.

Megan Niesel took the loss.

Jennifer Sharp was the only UNA player to reach base against the Chargers with a hit and a walk.

UNA got six hits in game 2, but it could not solve Alabama-Huntsville pitcher Sage Woodham, who struck out three in seven scoreless innings, running her record to 17-4.

Lindsey Greene went 2-for-4 for UNA, which left seven runners on base. Sabrina Roberts took the loss, allowing seven runs on 14 hits in six innings.

UNA concludes the regular season with doubleheaders at West Georgia and West Alabama this weekend.
