The Shoals Chamber of Commerce is looking into the feasibility of an indoor water park to be built in Veterans Park.

If the study finds that a water park would be a successful venture for the city, the park would be built on an 80-acre plot in Veterans Park. If built, it would be the only indoor water park in the state.

"The idea of an indoor water park is very unique and very attractive right now," says Steve Holt, president of the chamber.

Holt says that he hopes the park will draw tourism to the Shoals area. He also wants the park to keep visitors in the Shoals for extended stays in order to stimulate other local businesses, like hotels and restaurants.

Holt said the indoor park would be ideal because it would be year-round.

"We looked into a few ideas, and it was the only one with a developer interested. There are about five or six companies looking [to do the study]," Holt said.

"It'd be cool if they did it right," says Chuck Terry, an RTF major. "An indoor water park sounds ambitious."

The indoor water park was picked by the city from among twenty different concepts. The Retirement Systems of Alabama is also involved in the project.
