A tailgate party with Coach Mike Lane and the UNA baseball team will be held next Tuesday, March 11, from 4:30 until 5:30 p.m. on the Intramural Field across from Rice Hall.

The party precedes the UNA vs. Alabama baseball game, and the UNA Athletic Department, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Student Government Association are sponsoring the event. These sponsors will be providing grilled hamburgers and hotdogs for everyone in attendance.

"I invite all students to come to the tailgating party to see the newly renovated UNA baseball stadium and to kick off the baseball season for spring 2008," SGA President Justin "Bishop" Alexander said.

Renovations to the UNA baseball stadium started this past fall, and as part of the activities before Tuesday's game, there will be a ceremony to recognize all those who helped make the renovations possible.

This tailgate party is part of an effort by SGA to get more involvement in athletic sports. This is actually one of SGA's top 10 goals for 2007-2008.

SGA has been partnering with the athletic department to hold activities for sports such as basketball, football, volleyball and now baseball.

"I'm going [to the tailgate party] to support the university and our teams that don't get as much interest as football," SGA Sen. Michael Clark said. "Too many times we forget we have sports besides the ones that happen in the fall."

Senate Pro-Tempore Samuel Thigpen is in charge of organizing the event.

"Feel free to bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on at the intramural field for the tailgate party," Thigpen said. "Also, the first 50 students will receive a free baseball game day T-shirt provided by the SGA."

Along with the free food and T-shirts, entertainment will be provided by The Ray Brothers - a group that consists of Timmy Ray on keyboard, Benjamin Ray on drums, Brad Greene on saxophone, Lee Taylor on guitar and Joseph Thigpen on Bass. The Ray Brothers have proven to be very popular with students on campus.

"I think they're awesome," Crissy Elders, a senior in elementary education, said. "They have real talent, and I think they're going places."

The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. after the tailgate party and ceremony conclude, and activities are planned for after the game as well.

"FCA has contacted TNT Fireworks, and they will be putting on a firework show at the end of the game," Thigpen said.
