A Q&A session with Seance Fiction

Band members Alex Frost, Eric Clayton and Adam Lawson talk about their music

Issue date: 10/11/07 Section: Life
How would you describe your genre?

EC - We have a lot of heavy metal tendencies. If you were looking for us in a music store, we would definitely be in the metal section--if that store is cool enough to have such a thing. Otherwise, we'd been in the Rock/Pop section with everything else. Personally, I think we sound like Fear Factory and Strapping Young Lad meets A Perfect Circle and Nine Inch Nails. Of course, everybody's opinion is equally wrong.

How did Séance Fiction start?

EC - Actually it started with Frost back in '05.

AF - I had a project that I was doing that was just me messing around on the computer and I wanted to bring Evan in to help out. Evan was in a band called Idiot at the time, but we had always wanted to work together. So, when Idiot broke up I was like "Hey, why don't you work on this with me?"

EC - For like six months when I go into this I was like "Screw this, I don't care." It was great from the beginning, but it was like I had just gotten out of a serious relationship. Idiot was together for about 2 years. I was like "Yeah, let's make a band, I've played this game before." It was hard for me to get jazzed about it. But I'm happier now than I've ever been.

(To Adam) When did you come into the picture?

AL - Well, I had been an extreme fan of this band since day one. So when they had problems with their old bass player, Brian called me. He was like "We're looking for a change." I mean, from the way he was asking me at first, like "Hey man, I got a question to ask you," you know, I thought he was going to ask if it was okay if he dates one of my ex-girlfriends. And I was impressed. I was like "This guy is a lot nicer than I thought he was."

Why music?

EC - I've wanted to do this since I was twelve years old. The more and more I listened to music, the more I developed an appetite. Everything else in my life I consider a job or a hobby. This is the only thing I can consider a passion. It's like a constant need to progress further. Music kind of keeps my furnace going.
