Next week, April 21-28, citizens of Lauderdale County will have an opportunity to help clean up local roadbanks. The event is the Florence-Lauderdale 2007 Anti-Litter Campaign, dubbed "Every litter bit hurts."

All groups, organizations, schools, businesses, and individuals are asked to join and help clean up "unsightly trash along our rights-of-way," according to a statement from Mayor Bobby Irons.

The kick-off is scheduled for Saturday. Trash bags will be available at Florence fire stations, town halls, and the Lauderdale County Solid Waste Office, located on Cloverdale Road.

Filled trash bags may be left by volunteers along the city and county road sides for the Solid Waste Department to collect. Coordinators suggest that those participating use work gloves for safety.

More information can be obtained by calling 760-6495 for city questions, and 760-5878 for county.

Also, any groups interested in Florence's "Adopt-a-Street" program are now able to "adopt" an area and agree to keep it litter-free for two years. Supplies such as trash bags and safety vests will be furnished. Signs denoting who adopted the streets will be posted in the areas. Information on this program is available from the City Street Department, which can be reached by calling 760-6460 or visiting www.florenceal.org. The program is a part of the Adopt-a-Mile program.
