The University of North Alabama Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society (UNA SAACS) will sponsor a free concert as part of its annual Earth Day event this year. The event is called "Chemists Rock Earth Day," and the concert will last for four hours starting at noon Friday, April 20 at the UNA Amphitheater.
"My original idea was quite simple.? A small band, some free food, and some brochures on recycling," said Amanda Hofacker, an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry and Industrial Hygiene at UNA.
She says that the ideas for this event have been growing greatly as she receives responses from UNA students and the community.
The American Chemical Society is a national organization of chemists with a number of local chapters and student affiliate organizations across the United States. "Each year, the ACS creates a theme for Chemists Celebrate Earth Day," Hofacker said, "and the national, regional, local, and affiliate chapters host events all over the country in honor of Earth Day."
The American Chemical Society has a number of local sections which represent local universities and other organizations throughout the United States. "
According to Hofacker, UNA is represented by The American Chemical Society Wilson Dam Section.
"Recycle All We Can" is this year's SAACS main theme. With cooperation of Florence Recycling Center, UNA SAACS is hosting a free concert and recycling collection at UNA. UNA SAACS will be featuring three musical performances: The Chemical Welfare Agent, The Wizard of TUNA, and a local jam band, The Apollo Program.
For The Apollo Program, this is the first time to play on the UNA campus. The drummer of the band, Jim Steele, originally brought up the idea to play. Steele is a junior at UNA majoring in Industrial Hygiene. "I just said we would play," he said.
While thinking of the ideas for the Earth Day event, Steele suggested a concert to Hofacker early this semester. The idea was approved by Hofacker, and she worked with others to make it happen.
