The department of geography has announced that Justin Hart, a bio-geographer from the University of Tennessee, will be joining the faculty, and that a new major option, business geography, will be available this fall.
Hart will be teaching physical geography classes as well as a dendrochronology (the study of tree rings) laboratory, which will be added to the schedule for him. "Dendrochronology deals with using tree rings to look at forest ecology, changes in vegetation and climate," said Dr. William Strong, chair of the geography department.
According to Strong, Hart will provide field experience for students by taking them into the woods for hands-on experience of what they have learned in the classroom. He will also help develop a bio-geography course.
In addition to new faculty and courses, the geography department is also offering a new major, business geography, beginning this fall.
"All business takes place in geographic space," Strong said.
Strong and Lisa Keys-Mathews, assistant professor of geography at UNA, along with professors from Texas State University, recently published some papers dealing with business geography curriculum that appeared in several journals. They also presented the work at the Applied Geography Conference in Washington D.C. in October of last year.
The curriculum plan for business geography is a core of geography classes with supporting classes from the UNA College of Business.
