I was surprised but not shocked to learn that several "important" positions in the SGA were filled by people elected without opposition. What does this illustrate about the attitude toward the SGA at UNA?
I believe this illustrates that no one really cares about the SGA, and it really has no power. Maybe the SGA second vice president that heads up the UPC has the power to actually affect life on campus by hosting events and concerts.
I also found it interesting that one of the SGA's goals this year is to lower food prices in the GUC. Has no one in the SGA taken economics? Do they not understand the law of supply and demand?
Don't students understand that the University doesn't set the food prices? The only way to lower food prices in the GUC without imposing communistic practices is to boycott Sodexho, the international food service corporation that controls UNA's food service.
I however will have no part in any proposed boycott. I believe the prices are justified because of the convenience factor.
Convenience is the reason junk food at gas stations is so expensive as compared to grocery stores.
Now as for the SGA's goal of reforming the attendance policy, I believe we should all support their efforts to change UNA's oppressive attendance regulations. Students should be able to decide for themselves if their presence in class is necessary.
I'm sure I'm not the only student at UNA that routinely learns nothing of practical significance in certain classes. I've gone to countless hour and fifteen minute classes this semester only to be barraged with useless information.
I won't go into detail about these happenings in certain classes that make a mockery of education, in order to protect my grades.
