UNA President Dr. William G. Cale announced Tuesday that vice president for student affairs and university counsel Dr. Thomas M. Lovett has decided to return to the classroom after this semester.

Dr. Cale also announced that he is appointing athletic director Dr. Joel Erdmann as the interim vice president for student affairs.

"The president wants to make some changes with which I certainly agree," Lovett said. "He can move the university forward in the direction he chooses and I have an opportunity to revitalize myself as an academic educator.

"I got into this business as a classroom teacher and migrated into the practice of law and higher education administration. Administration has been good to me, but I want to capitalize on this opportunity to focus on the discipline of law and to work closer with students."

Lovett has been an educator for 35 years. Earlier in his career, he was a math teacher and counselor in public, private and parochial K-12 systems in the U.S. and Saudi Arabia and taught adult basic education at a community college. Lovett has taught education, law, counseling and business classes at three universities: the University of Arkansas, Southeast Missouri State University and UNA.

He has been an attorney for more than 26 years and a college administrator for 25. Now he will return to the classroom as a professor in the Department of Accounting and Business Law with the UNA College of Business where he will teach business law classes.

"Tom has had a very long career as a senior administrator. We appreciate those years of service, particularly at UNA. I am confident he will continue to make great strides through his teaching," Cale said.

In addition to serving as UNA's legal counsel, Lovett, during his 14-year tenure as vice president of student affairs, oversaw the building of a student recreation center, renovation of current resident halls and construction of new residence halls. Two student apartment complexes were acquired; student health services was revamped; new and transfer student scholarship programs were created; and several student leadership, diversity and mentoring programs were implemented. He has worked actively to foster positive relations between UNA and the Shoals.

His UNA division includes enrollment management, admissions, student financial services, career services, student life, university events, student development services, intramural sports and fitness, housing and residence life and health services. During his tenure, UNA has increased enrollment, setting new records last fall and this spring.
