Like many retail stores in the English Village shopping center in Florence, this one has it all.
Fresh baked goods, high-style New York fashions, home décor and furniture, fun outdoors gear, bath and body products, toys galore and food for breakfast, lunch, dinner and any snacks in between.
The only difference between this store and X-travagance by Susan or the Sweet Basil Café is this is as much of a store for humans as it is for pets.
As the name says, PetWorks is the works for pets.
With an in-store bakery that makes fresh, homemade treats daily and a boutique that carries stylish rhinestone collars and puppy polo shirts as well as backpacks, fanny packs and portable bowls for the more outdoorsy dog, PetWorks definitely sets itself apart from other chain pet stores in the Shoals.
Bob Ozbirn, the current owner and mastermind behind the Florence PetWorks, opened his first pet store in Russelville in 1993. He opened his second in Muscle Shoals in 2001 and then the third about six months ago.
"We wanted to open something that was a little different," said Ozbirn. "Something that was more independent."
Ozbirn wanted to bring in more sophisticated pet owners, so when he saw a space available in the English Village Shoppng Center, he took it.
As for the store's unique bakery and boutique, The Bad Black Dog, the name came from Ozbirn's black standard poodle.
"When we were first baking in the bakery, Swarzie was a bad dog. He was running around, barking and throwing a fit because of the treats."
Valerie McCarthy, who keeps the made-from-scratch peanut butter pitneys and bacon cheeseburger chompers fresh said, "This is something you're not going to find in at other chain pet stores."
