PetWorks puts emphasis on quality, not quantity

Although the bakery and boutique are PetWorks most eye-catching features, the store's main goal is to teach pet owners about nutrition.

"We like people to think of us when they think of dog food," said McCarthy. "We want to teach people who are paying good money for dog food what is good quality and what is better quality. All the food we carry is high-quality, but of course, there are some that are better than others."

PetWorks carries well-known brands like Science Diet, Natural Choice and Eukanuba. But they also carry brands that are new to the Shoals like Merrick, California Natural and Innova--which are all more natural and carry better and wholesome ingredients.

While Merrick catches the dog and cat owner's eye with canned food that looks more like vegetable and meat canned soup (flavors like Working Dog Stew, Turducken and New England Boil) and dry food that contains real peas and carrots, it's the Innova that the staff of PetWorks recommends above all else.

"The grain that's in Innova is not corn--a lot of dogs are allergic to corn, or wheat, which is usually a filler and is in most dog foods. Innova uses brown rice and potatoes," said PetWorks employee Adam Taylor. "Also, the meat that goes into it is not a meal or by-product, it's whole turkey or whole chicken. The whole meat is the main ingredient of the food--unlike Science Diet or Eukanuba where chicken meal is the first and main ingredient."

Besides being one of top natural dog foods and one of the most recommended, Innova steps it up another notch with its Innvoa Evo.

"If you have a dog that is overweight or has severe skin allergies, this is an alternative to medicine," said Taylor. "The Evo has absolutely no grain, it's all meat and vegetables. The protein content is 42 percent, which is really good."

"This is a high protein, low-carb diet for dogs," said McCarthy. "It's okay for puppies too--actually it's fine for all stages of life."

And because Innova is not yet as popular as Science Diet or Eukanuba, many customers are astounded that PetWorks has it on the shelves.
