UNA has recently announced plans of building a black box theatre on the backside of Norton Auditorium. A black box theatre is typically a smaller type of stage in which the seating for the audience generally surrounds the stage itself. This type of theatre has been said to give the audience a better sense of connection with the performance.
With the semester winding down, students are usually making summer plans and saying their good-byes. But many are having their possessions, such as books and laptops, stolen due to their own carelessness. One of the places that students frequently leave belongings unattended is Collier Library.
On Wednesday, April 8, Student Engagement took 16 students to the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tenn. The museum tour was followed by lunch at the Arcade, Memphis' oldest restaurant. Then the group took a vintage ride down to Beale Street. Finally, they visited the Peabody Memphis Hotel for the famous "Duck Walk" before returning to Florence.
Some of the buildings at UNA will be getting much needed renovations in an effort to make them more energy and cost efficient. According to UNA President Dr. William Cale, the buildings being renovated will use at least 15 percent less energy due to the improvements.
On Saturday, April 11, the Center for International Programs (CIP) took 34 students to the Birmingham Museum of Art for their Spring Day Trip. After the museum visit, the students spent time at the Riverchase Galleria in Birmingham. CIP had an overwhelming response of students wanting to go on the trip.
Environmentalist and educator Roald Hazelhoff will speak at UNA on Tuesday, April 28. Hazelhoff's presentation entitled "Hug a tree and call me in the morning: the business case for greening the work place," will take place in Wesleyan Auditorium, 12 to 1:30 p.
The following members of Phi Beta Lambda represented UNA at the State PBL Competitions on Friday and Saturday, April 17 and 18. All 17 competitors placed in the top three in the state in at least one of their two events and many placed in both events. Fourteen of the competitors have qualified to compete at the National PBL Competitions in June in Anaheim, Calif.
