Trustees review economic study

Members of UNA's economics department presented the findings of their study on economic development in the Shoals to the Board of Trustees on Friday. The study, which was requested by the Board, took about six months to complete and includes information such as job growth in north Alabama, availability of building sites, vacant buildings and local leaders' perceptions of development in the area.

SGA sets goals

After the SGA elections last week, students are preparing for the annual changing of the guard. The end of a year is traditionally a time to evaluate accomplishments and set goals for the road ahead. Second vice president-elect Crystal Preslar, who served this year as SGA secretary, will take office April 11.

I'M OPEN, I'M OPEN-The world-famous Harlem Globetrotters brought their travelling act to UNA Monday night. The sold-out game was held in Flowers Hall. The team made human pyramids, performed acrobatic feats and even managed to work in a little basketball. Program promotes tattoo education

Kim West knew she had to try something different. West is a resident assistant in Hawthorne Hall, and her duties include organizing programs for her floor's residents. Every RA on campus is required to coordinate four programs each semester, including at least one that involves a UNA staff or faculty member.

Student loan rates to rise over summer

On July 1, federal student loans rates will increase by 35-40 percent. Students who have graduated or are about to graduate need to act now to consolidate their loans to lock in the current interest rates, which are the lowest in over 38 years. Students with a debt of $20,000 could pay as much as $4,500 more over the life of their loans in a 20-year period.

DIVERSE VOICES

Shina Southard, president of the Campus HIV Awareness Task Force, and Bridget Byrd, from the Alabama Department of Public Health, answered questions about HIV and AIDS at the "Created Equal" conference presented by the Gay-Straight Alliance last week. Other topics of discussion included religion, political activism and making the campus comfortable for everyone.
