Alabama's college students flock to Higher Education Day

Several hundred students from Alabama's public universities gathered outside of the Alabama State House in Montgomery last Thursday as part of Higher Education Day. The rally was held outside of the state legislators' offices to show the support that higher education has in Alabama, and to encourage them to pass a budget that provides adequate funding for higher education.

Students roll up sleeves for blood drive

On March 1 and 2, the SGA sponsored a blood drive to benefit the American Red Cross. Many people from the American Red Cross came to help make the blood drive at UNA a successful one. Karla Prater-Watkins, a Collections Specialist II Supervisor with the Huntsville Red Cross, said that the participation by students was much higher on Wednesday than on Tuesday.

Dr. Claudia Vance, assistant professor of modern foreign languages, is originally from Colombia. She is actively involved with the local Latin community. Vance is currently doing research in Franklin County about the socioeconomic impact that Latin American immigrants are having on the area.

Greer: Legislature controlled by interest groups

Following the Higher Education Day rally on the steps of the Alabama State House, legislators from the Shoals area met with UNA students to discuss the issue of higher education funding. Lynn Greer and Nelson Starkey, both representing Lauderdale County, Marcel Black, representing Colbert County, and State Senator Rodger Bedford explained why the education budget gets cut to fund other projects and services.

Finding the redneck within

Kirk Read was born and raised in Lexington, Va., but he had to move all the way to San Francisco to get in touch with his inner redneck. Despite growing up in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley in the 1980s, he never got a lesson in country-western dancing until moving to California's fourth largest city in 1998.

Group holds daylong conference to start conversations for campus, community, state

"Gay" is a word most often spoken in whispers, especially in the Bible belt South. Recent developments in the country and the state have forced the gay community center stage, for better or for worse. The UNA Gay-Straight Alliance believes the time has come for UNA students to stop speaking in whispers and start having meaningful conversations about these topics.
